SMS products at The Arizona Republic

Texting was the center of two projects at The Arizona Republic.

The first was a COVID help line, quick texts with numbers and information.

This project used Subtext, and were strategically trying to get information, not just news, out to populations who needed it, especially at a time where much dis- and misinformation was being shared.

People signed up through referrals and finding the project page, there was little marketing behind this.

I conceived of, and ran, the entire project by myself, with some help from an audience editor.

The second texting project we dubbed Con La Phoeniquera, and served a younger, bilingual audience.

It was part of a larger strategy to revamp La Voz, a storied Spanish newspaper. The aim was to not be Spanish-language only, but bilingual. We translated stories back and forth from Spanish to English.

There was also an Instagram strategy to connect with the same people
